EU Pilot Grant (2019-2021) - “Promoting alternatives to animal testing through accessible and harmonised education & training” - Grant No. 07.027741/2018/794340/ SUB/ENV.B2

This grant was awarded by the European Commission, DG environment in 2019 and ran until 2021. 

Objectives

  1. Development of guidance on the principles and quality standards of assessment criteria for Learning Outcomes and assessment criteria for Core and EU-Function A specific modules.
  2. Development of a questions database for (theoretical) Core and EU-Function A specific modules.
  3. Development of a database for the assessment of practical skills for EU-Function A.
  4. Development of the required (ETPLAS) IT infrastructure.

WG-2 - Database (protected) with theoretical questions for all Core and Function A specific modules for mouse, rat and zebrafish. The questions database will serve as the resource for the exam module, which is developed under the Action grant. 

 

WG-3 - DOPS (Directly Observed Practical Skills) forms were developed for Function A practical modules for mouse, rat and zebrafish. They can be downloaded for free from the ETPLAS website. An instructional video on 'what DOPS entail' was created and can be viewed on YouTube

 

WG-4 - ETPLAS website improvements were implement. The further development and maintenance are ongoing. 

EU Preparatory Action Grant (2021-2024) - “Promoting alternatives to animal testing through accessible and harmonised education & training” - Grant No. 09.200200.A092004/2021/864077/SUB/ENV.B.2

This grant was awarded by the European Commission, DG environment in 2021 and runs until the end 2024.

Objectives

  1. Expansion of training assessment criteria for functions B and C as defined in the Directive. 
  2. Expansion of the question database for theoretical core and function A, B and C specific modules
  3. Development of formal training assessment tools for course providers on the ETPLAS web platform
  4. Extension of Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) database for further eModules to support harmonised assessment of practical skills and thus raising standards for the care and humane use of animals.
  5. Development of Union wide continuing professional development (CPD) framework for the field of Laboratory Animal Science (LAS) to facilitate a harmonised approach to maintaining competence as required by the Directive.
  6. Further development of ETPLAS platform to allow incorporation of educational tools in relation to the Three Rs and non-animal approaches for all levels (from primary, to secondary schools, to universities and early career scientists) and ensuring an intuitive user experience to search and access to relevant material and tools for trainees, course providers and authorities.
