In January 2019, ETPLAS was awarded a Grant from the European Commission for a Pilot Project “Promoting alternatives to animal testing through accessible and harmonised education & training”

The mission was to fulfil 5 Actions

  • Action 1 – Development of guidance on the principles and quality standards of assessment criteria for Learning Outcomes
  • Action 2 – Development of assessment criteria for Core modules and Function A specific modules
  • Action 3 – Establishment of a question database for theoretical Core and Function A specific modules
  • Action 4 – Establishment of a database of assessment of practical tasks for Function A persons
  • Action 5 – Establishment of the required IT infrastructure

ETPLAS wishes to express its sincere ‘Thanks’ to the devotion and contribution of the Members of all 5 Working Groups; their mission was successfully completed and the outcomes are hosted on the redesigned ETPLAS Website since 2021 (www.etplas.eu ) and are openly accessible for all those who register.

In January 2021, ETPLAS was again awarded a Grant from the European Commission for a Preparatory Action “Promoting alternatives to animal testing through accessible and harmonised education & training”

This Grant lasts for 36 months and is still running

The specific objectives of the Preparatory Action Grant are

  1. Expansion of training assessment criteria for functions B and C as defined in the Directive;
  2. Expansion of the question database for the theoretical core and functions A, B and C specific modules;
  3. Development of formal training assessment tools for course providers on the ETPLAS web platform;
  4. Extension of Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) database for further eModules (with attention also to those developed under a separate service contract under the same EP Preparatory Action) to support harmonised assessment of practical skills and thus raising standards for the care and humane use of animals;
  5. Development of a Union wide continuing professional development (CPD) framework for the field of laboratory animal science 5LAS) to facilitate harmonised approach to the maintenance of competence as required by the Directive;
  6. Further development of ETPLAS platform to allow incorporation of educational tools in relation to the Three Rs and non-animal approaches for all levels (from primary, to secondary schools, to universities and early career scientists) and ensuring an intuitive used experience to search and access th relevant material and tools for trainees, course providers and authorities.
